The Afghan Whigs

There are plenty of new people in the MySpace group and also visitors to this blog (welcome!!) so I just wanted to remind everyone that Sundays are usually reserved for songs that are 10 years or older. The classic stuff. Please feel free to give ideas on future classics and you...yes you... can submit your own reviews to be featured here as well. I'm not going to try to be specific in my writeup of the Afghan Whigs. Plenty of you already know the history of this great Ohio band and will be able to start a thread on the group or something, so instead I will free write my connection to them. During the late 80's I ended up purchasing an album called Big Top Halloween. Once I listened to it, I could hear enough Squirrel Bait, Soul Asylum or something in it to keep listening. It was full on punk rock with this strange rural yet urban feeling to it. I'll be honest and say that, despite my romanticism of the early 90s nothing much was really happening for me back then. At the time I had 3 CDs in constant rotation. Bob Mould's Black Sheets of Rain, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and the classic Afghan Whigs album today's song belongs to. Congregation. In a previous Twilight Singers review to coincide with their latest release, I had this to say...

Once upon a time (a very long time ago...don't ask) I was getting ready to start school at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. One night I made my way into a small punk rock club where a band was playing upstairs. I went up to find four guys on stage playing Pink Floyd covers to a mostly empty room. I stuck around for three or four songs but that was all I could take. It was awful. The name of that band? The Afghan Whigs from Cincinnati, Ohio. It's kind of funny now, seeing as they are one of my favorite bands of all time.

It always surprises me to find that many AW fans haven't heard anything prior to Gentlemen. Please check out what I would consider to be the band's best work. It was released via Sub Pop in 1992 so it will still be relatively easy to get your hands on. I never knew that the song had a name. It was always just the bonus track back then. I will conclude with some links for you since I am far too sleepy to incorporate them into today's ramblings. I hope you enjoy this and if you want more, just leave a comment. I can always spill this into Monday with a later AW song if prodded enough to do so?

Oh shit I almost forgot. For those of you that actually read this, there is a bonus for you big time!! Here is a YouTube video of this song. It's a different and maybe an older version. Very disturbing but also incredible. Feel free to leave comments there. I did.

Great post. I did one myself back in January. http://www.thepsychicpilot.com/?p=74

Ex-drummer Steve Earle has also got a new band called Earle Grey. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=8768399

AW always had a hit & miss relationship with me, but they did enough good stuff to peak my curiousity and keep me interested. "Miles Iz Ded" is a great song. Thanks for sharing.
